Although early September can feel like an extension of summer in the UK, by the end of the month there’s a definite shift as autumn begins to creep in. The first apples start to fall from the trees, tart and fragrant, and warmer notes of cinnamon and nutmeg begin to find their way into my cooking.

JUST IN: apples, horseradish, kale, leeks, loganberries, onions, pears, romanesco cauliflower, savoy cabbage, swede
STAYING IN SEASON: aubergine, beetroot, blackberries, broccoli, carrots, chard, chillies, elderberries, fennel, figs, garlic, globe artichoke, hispi cabbage, kale, leeks, plums, red cabbage, runner beans, sorrel, spinach, sweetcorn, tomatoes, turnips, watercress, white cabbage
LAST MONTH TO ENJOY: bilberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, celery, chervil, cucumber, damsons, field rhubarb, french beans, greengages, mangetout, peaches, peas, peppers, radishes, raspberries, redcurrants, strawberries, summer squash (ie. courgettes and patty pan, also a good month for courgette flowers), tenderstem broccoli
